warden

warden
In Britain a warden is likely to be the chief official in an old people’s home, a remand home for delinquent children, and similar institutions where the inmates have to be guarded or protected in some way. In a Youth Hostel his function is to see that the rules of the establishment are obeyed by visitors.
In prisons, especially American prisons, the warden is the man or woman in charge, often known in Britain as the prison governor. ‘He has a very bad influence on Royston, hasn’t he, Warden?’ says a character in On the Loose, by John Stroud, a novel which describes life in a children’s home.
